Collings Foundation Wings of Freedom Tour came to the Carroll County Regional Airport, Westminster, Maryland on 2018 October 12-14. Mt Airy Composite Squadron cadets and seniors joined other Maryland Wing Civil Air Patrol squadron members to assist with the air show event. Some of the duties included flight line security and parking. Cadets had an opportunity to practice their radio communications, logistic abilities, command and public relations. History enthusiast, Cadet Technical Sergeant Dimitry Madsen, attended one day of the event in a WWII, Civil Air Patrol, re-enactment uniform. He joined foundation re-enactors who sported German, British and American attire.
The Collings Foundation is a non-profit, Educational Foundation that was founded in 1979. Their purpose is to organize and support “living history” events. The preservation, exhibition and interaction of historical artifacts enable Americans to learn more about their heritage through direct participation. The Wings of Freedom tour started in 1989 with two goals: (1) honor the sacrifices made by our veterans and (2) educate the visitors about our national history and heritage.
The experience was amazing. Visitors and volunteers were encouraged to get up close and personal with these historic aircrafts. Everyone, young and old, enjoyed the activities, sights, sounds, food and fun. Event photos taken by senior member Madsen presented the perfect opportunity to play with period postcards.
